Staff from Archaeology wish to convey their support for students occupying the Roscoe Building and other peaceful demonstrations by students against the proposed cuts in Higher Education. The undersigned believe that the ending of government funding for the teaching of the Humanities and Social Sciences will be detrimental not only to Higher Education in Britain but to independent and critical thought. The proposed measures will commercialise and commodify HE in a way that is quite at odds with free expression. Furthermore, putting the burden of funding onto students by raising tuition fees will lead to greater social inequality. We support our students in their resistance to higher tuition fees and unfair cuts.
